At His Gate

(Lukje 16:19-31)

At his gate he laid, the poor man, Lazarus.
Everyday longing for some rich table scraps.
He was covered in soars and constantly prayed
That comforting relief would find him, perhaps.
God heard his prayers and sent dogs for relief
From the pain as they would lick his open soars.
The gate that he chose, though it looked rich,
Turned out, not the best choice of gate doors.

For no pity or mercy did Lazarus ever find
While he was laying at that rich man’s gate.
Not until the angles took him away, to Heaven’s
Banquet where he dined with Abraham and ate.
The rich man also died, was buried and went
All by himself to the place of the dead.
Where he saw Abraham and Lazarus far away
And in a loud voice he shouted as he said,

“Father Abraham, have some pity on me!
Send Lazarus to come and cool my tongue.
For I am in anguish, among these hot flames,
With a feeling, my suffering has just begun.”
But Abraham said, “Son, remember in life, having
Everything you ever wanted, or would ever need.
And Lazarus had nothing, now’s comforted here.”
The rich man thought and responded, “Indeed.”

“But please, Father Abraham at least send Lazarus
To my five brothers, living at my father’s home.
Please have him warn them,  so they will not come
To this place of pain. To this burning torture dome!
But Abraham said, “The scriptures have warned.
Your brothers can read, everything that God wrote.”
“No, Father Abraham! But if some is sent
back from the dead they will surely take note.”

But Abraham said, “If they won’t listen to scripture
which is God’s Word, they won’t repent of sin.
And they won’t be persuaded to turn to God
Even if a dead man would rise and live again.”
Believe if you will, this account is not fiction
But stated as fact and with a noteworthy fate.
For the man who does not care for the poor,
hurting people, who are laid by God at his gate.
