The Tree

By Richard Boll

Jesus and Joseph would walk through the woods
While searching for trees that were very good.
Cutting and smoothing them, so that they could use,
the lumber to make fine furnishings for the Jews.

Once they were walking when they came to a tree.
Suddenly Jesus stopped and he fell to his knees.
Crying, “Father please tell me, is this tree the one?”
Joseph’s puzzled reply, “No! Not this one, my Son?”

“You see a tree of this kind is of no use to us.
It’s all battered and torn; it’s not worth the fuss.
If we build with this tree we might suffer a loss.
It could used to make spears or perhaps a cross.”

You see Joseph really did not understand why,
Why on that day, at that tree he saw his son cry.
Or even, why such a question would Jesus ask?
He spent his whole life, choosing good trees that last.

Each year that would pass, Jesus would visit that tree.
There you could see him pray and fall to his knees.
“Dear Father please tell me, is this tree the one?”
God’s painful reply, ‘Yes, it’s is the one,my Son.’ ”

On this tree you will die for all the sins of mankind.
You going to be all alone, not one friend you will find.
I so love you my Son, but this cup will you bear?
For when you need me the most, I will not be there.’

Jesus knew death was near, that year that tree was not found.
You see some time that year the Romans cut that tree down.
That is when Jesus began to tell his friends of God’s plan.
Pulling Him aside to rebuked him! They did not understand.

That on that tree Jesus would die for all the sins of mankind.
Brutally be nailed to that tree, with no friend could he find.
He would sacrificed His life, so that the world could be free
He would die all alone, because of his love you and me.

His old friend the tree, yes they met once again.
Both were battered and torn, with his blood on their skins.
Jesus died all alone, not even God could he see

He died all alone, just Jesus and the tree…

He died all alone, just Jesus and the tree…

He died all alone, just Jesus and – the tree.
